LS students in the library

Schutz American School has two libraries. One is located in the Upper School campus for students of ages 12 to 18. The other library is in the Lower School building for students of ages 3 to 11.

The Upper School Library: The Upper Library has a collection of 7,000 books, 900 videos and DVD's, 14 computers with on-line internet access, and subscriptions to 30 magazines. Users can access the on-line library catalog, Spectrum, from any computer in the school. The Upper School Library also has wireless internet access.

The Lower School Library: The Lower Library has a collection of 5,000 books, 400 videos and DVD's, and subscriptions to 10 magazines. Students from Pre-k to 6th grade have scheduled library lessons each week for library skills and book and magazine check-out. There are 4 computers available with on-line internet access.

Sign Up Calendars: Teachers may sign up online to use the libraries. Lower School staff may use the Lower School Library Sign Up Calendar. Upper School staff may use the Upper School Library Sign Up Calendar.

Lessons: The library is an integral part of the classroom curriculum. Library lessons are designed to support and enhance class learning.

Leisure reading: To encourage reading and a love of books, we hold regular book sales. We also offer the students the chance to buy books from overseas through a local agent.

Library User Guidelines....

Library Hours: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Sunday to Thursday. Students may use the library before school, at breaks and lunchtime, and after school. During lessons, permission from the teacher is required.

Borrowing: Fiction, non-fiction, magazines and videos may be borrowed for two weeks. Students with overdue books may not check out any other materials, except with librarian's permission.

Check out: Books and magazines are checked out at the circulation desk. Most materials are checked out electronically.  Each patron and material has a number in our system. Patron’s can stamp the return date on the book's date due slip as a reminder. Returned books and magazines should be deposited at the circulation desk, not reshelved.

Overdue or lost materials: The borrower is responsible for all items checked out in his/her name, and will be charged twice the original purchase price of any item that is lost or badly damaged.  Materials not returned within a month of the due date will be assumed lost or badly damaged. Quarterly report cards will be withheld for students with overdue materials.

Behavior: Food and drink may not be brought into the library. Bags should be left on the tables at the door. Cell phones may not be used in the library. The library is a place for reading and quiet study. Students should make sure that their behavior will not disturb others. Those abusing library materials or causing disturbance may lose their library privileges.

Printing: The printer is for single copies of library and class assignments. Multiple copies should be made in the photocopying room.
