PreK-3 Assembly: "Community Helpers"
Our assembly’s theme was about community helpers and how they affect our lives. We began our assembly with a sideshow of our students in different community costumes while playing the song “People Helping Each Other” by Barney. The students of Pre-K 3 were delighted to dress-up and perform jobs of various community helpers on stage. They ended their performance by singing a song that described each and every role that they had performed. Congratulations Pre-K 3 to a job well done!
PreK-4 Assembly: "International Friendship"
February was International Friendship Month. During that month the Pre-K 4 children (Rainbows and Butterflies) learned that friendship knows no global boundaries, and that although we are all different in some ways, in our hearts we are all the same. To conclude the theme the children performed a short play and sang two songs about friendship and diversity.
Kindergarten Assembly: "How the Dragonflies Came To Be"
Part I
The Dragonflies did an instrumental improvisation using a drum, a xylophone, several bells and sticks. Someone made the comment that it sounded like an Indonesian Gamelan.
Part 2
After first hearing Harry Belafonte’s famous version of The Banana Boat Song, the Dragonflies requested hearing it the classroom almost every day. This fascination led to a great live performance of the song.
Part 3
Very little people knew the true origins on the Dragonflies. The Assembly was their chance to go public with the story. The dragonflies showed a movie revealing their mysterious beginning. It involves a robot, a meteorite, an explosion and lots of birds.
1st Grade Assembly: "Changes"
We had some special music to start with, by Malini. Our assembly started with a Photo Story movie to highlight the students who had left. Then, with songs and lines read by the children, they traced the things that they studied throughout the school year. In the grand finale, they sang “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” while the slides of the maps and charts went by on the screen. Great job First Grade!
2nd Grade Assembly: "Celebrate the Life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr."
The 2nd Graders have been studying the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. His birthday is January 15th. The United States honors Dr. King with an official hioliday (Martin Luther King Day) on January 19th. The 2nd Graders will share their own version of his “I Have a Dream” speech, play a five-minute clip of him giving this speech, and sing a song that was popular during the Civil Rights Movement, as well as a very simple song about Dr. King that we’ll ask everyone to join in on!
3rd Grade Assembly: "Communities Around the World:
The 3rd Grade students showed off their hard work in their "Communities Around the World" project at the October Assembly. The students sang a song they created about the different countries (the music was created by Dr. Greg). Mrs. Shadia taught the students a Carribean and Swedish folk dance which they preformed.
After the presentations, the students showed off their work (country maps, country brochures and Cinderalla stories) to their parents. Congratulations on a job well done!
4th Grade Assembly: "The Lorax"
The Grade 4 students are learning about natural resources and how to conserve them in social studies. At 9:00 AM on September 30, 2008, the fourth grade held their assembly. In it, they presented the Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax, which was written back in the 1960s when the world was going through an energy crisis.
Greg started the assembly by leading the class in a song – the words were from The Lorax, and he created the music. Next, each class member took a turn in presenting their part of the story, while class members added some movements behind them.
To close, the students shared their posters on how children can help the environment (they are now posted in the far stairwell in Walters Hall). Alaa El Damaty and Aya Kordy presented a speech on behalf of the 11th and 12th grade classes thanking Elementary about their contributions to the Ramadan Food Drive. Following this, 4th Quarter Honor Roll certificates were presented. Finally, Ms. Debbie, Ms. Ji Yung, and Ms. Walsh presented a new library reading activity.
5th Grade Assembly: "Thanksgiving"
During the month of October the Grade 5 students studied various forms of poetry, including Diamante and Sense Poems. Each of them was then given an assignment: they were asked to think of 5 “gifts” related to their senses for which they were thankful. As an example, one might be thankful for the smell of cookies baking in the oven or for the giggles made by their baby brother.
Once the children had decided on their five sensory gifts, they turned them into a 5-line poem. The next step was to take photographs representing each of the 5 gifts they had chosen. These photos were brought to school, and in IT class Miss Mona helped them to create colorful slides using both a variety of texts and backgrounds.
Meanwhile in Music class Mr. Greg had been given a copy of each of the poems. He took the heartfelt thoughts of the children and created a magical piece of music entitled Thankfulness. Slow in tempo, the song was not eagerly embraced by the children the first time they sang it. However, with Mr. Greg’s gentle prodding, they began to unlock the key to understanding what Thankfulness represented. It is the simple things in life for which we can be most thankful. The orange glow of a sunset, the warm hug of your mother, the simple gathering around the table to break bread together; these are the golden gifts that life has to offer us.
The children practiced the poems and songs several times during the week before the Grade 5 Assembly, and then on Thanksgiving Day they presented the program in front of their parents and fellow students.
6th Grade Assembly: "What We Learned in Walters' Hall"
The Grade 6 Assembly was held Wednesday June 10 as part of the Lower School’s Falcon Day celebration. Mr. Greg organized a wonderful musical program including all students from Pre-Kindergarten 3 up to Grade 6. He even included some special musical guests from Grades 7 and 8. The Grade 6 class really showed their oral abilities in a performance called “All We Need to Know We Learned in Walters' Hall”. The students had brainstormed all the things they had learned during their time in Walters' Hall, and created a PowerPoint slide show to accompany their list. The students surprised their former teachers by presenting them with flowers. The assembly was concluded with the presentation of the President Awards which were awarded to Sarah-Luna Luke and Yun Jung Kim.
