January 20th H1N1 Update Dear Schutz Community: We would like to inform you that we have confirmed a case of H1N1 influenza virus in the 8th grade. The 8th grade class will be closed from tomorrow, Thursday, January 21st through Monday, February 1st. Thank you for your patience as we face the new and evolving challenges of the H1N1 issue. Our practice of closing classes for two weeks is in line with the government recommendations and is part of our protocol. When a class is closed, there is no school contact from students allowed for one week with the exception of Schutz Online and phone calls. However, Schutz is committed to providing extra instructional support by allowing small group meetings on campus during the second week of a class closure. The Upper School Principal, Mr. Walsh, will contact families directly through Edline and/or telephone calls to advise you of the times your child may be on campus. Schedules vary from class to class based on teacher schedules, class size, and developmental needs. The purpose of extra sessions is to allow face-to-face contact with teachers in order to clarify curriculum and ask questions. Small group sessions allow teachers to provide guidance and support for Schutz Online for all students. Guidelines: o Students exhibiting flu symptoms should stay home following the protocol. o Class closures are two calendar weeks in duration. o Small group sessions may be scheduled during the second week of a class closure. o Individuals with flu symptoms should remain home as stated in the protocol. o Parents and students should check the school website and Edline regularly. Schutz is committed to providing a quality education while maintaining the necessary health standards. Thank you for your support as we work through these challenging situations.
Sincerely, Joyce Lujan Martinez Head of School
